On January 22, 2008, President Bush signed an Executive Order establishing the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. The Council members held their first meeting in February. One of their initial recommendations was to focus on increasing financial education for young people. The National Financial Literacy Challenge is a recognition program that uses a voluntary, online test to determine and reward high levels of financial literacy among America’s high school students.
Each of the top regional performers in the 2008 National Financial Literacy Challenge will win a $2,500 scholarship for use at the post-secondary institution of their choice. A $1,000 contribution in their name will additionally be given to the school or program* that provided their money management education.

In celebration of APAGS’s 20th anniversary in 2008, APAGS will acknowledge four outstanding graduate psychology students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in psychology and are on track to becoming future pioneers in the field. APAGS members who have demonstrated excellence in their work as leaders in research, practice, professional service, community service and/or legislative advocacy are eligible for this prestigious award. Four $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduate students who best represent future pioneering leaders of psychology. Candidates from diverse science and clinical training programs, as well as from diverse backgrounds, are encouraged to apply. In addition to the monetary award, winners will also receive travel funds (airfare through the APA Travel Office, plus reimbursement for 3 hotel nights) to attend the 2008 APA Convention in Boston to participate in a brief presentation of their work with the other award recipients.
All candidates must be APAGS members, currently enrolled (and in good academic standing) in a doctoral program in psychology. Winners must agree to attend the 2008 APA Convention in Boston to provide a brief presentation of their work and vision for the future of psychology in a program that features all of the winners. APAGS officers and/or subcommittee chairs are ineligible for this award.

The Collegiate Inventors Competition is a national competition that recognizes and rewards innovations, discoveries, and research by college and university students and their faculty advisors. The Competition encourages students who actively pursue invention. Students frequently come from science, engineering, mathematics, and technology studies but creative invention can emerge from any course of study. The Competition also recognizes the working relationship between a student and his or her advisor. The program was introduced in May, 1990 and is operated by the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation.
Up to 15 finalists will win an all-expenses paid trip in Fall 2008 to present their work to a panel of expert judges. Each finalist or finalist team will also receive $2000. One Undergraduate and one Graduate winner or team will each receive $15,000. One Grand Prize winner or team will receive $25,000. Academic advisors of each winning team also receive a cash award.

Atlantic Media is now seeking 5-10 exceptional or aspiring writers, editors and other online media talents to serve as Atlantic Media Fellows for the Fall of 2008 through the Spring of 2009. Candidates should be current students in or recent graduates of college or graduate school programs.
Atlantic Media Fellows join the staff of Atlantic Media — helping launch, research, write and edit new websites. Fellows are paid $30,000-$40,000 (depending on experience) for the nine-month appointment.
Fellows are expected to begin their service at Atlantic Media in September 2008 and continue through May 2009. There is some prospect, but no certainty, that Fellows may be offered employment with Atlantic Media following the fellowship.

Q: What are the STOP Hunger Scholarships?
A: The STOP Hunger Scholarships, a program of the Sodexho Foundation, allow us to recognize students in the fight against hunger in America. You are invited to nominate a young person, currently enrolled in an educational institution (kindergarten through college), who has positively contributed to the fight against hunger in his or her community.
Q: Why did the Sodexho Foundation create the STOP Hunger Scholarships?
A: We created the STOP Hunger Scholarships to recognize and reward the great things young people are doing to fight hunger in our communities across the country. Through scholarship awards, we are proud to support the education of these giving young people.
Q: Who is eligible to apply?
A: STOP Hunger Scholarships are open to students (Kindergarten through college) enrolled in an accredited educational institutions in the United States. Applicants must have demonstrated on-going commitment to their community by performing volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States at least within the last 12 months. Volunteer services must be helping non-family members. Applicants must obtain a nomination statement as part of the application process. The nomination statement must be completed by a Nominator; the Nominator must be 21 years old. All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Employees of Sodexho are not eligible to receive a scholarship, but they may nominate family members who are not employees of Sodexho. Previous STOP Hunger Scholarship recipients are not eligible.

A: We may select up to five national scholarship recipients; however, we reserve the right to select fewer than five national recipients. If the student selected is in school, but is not yet enrolled in an institution of higher education, then in lieu of a scholarship, a contribution in the amount of $3,000 shall be made to a qualified 529 Plan established by the family of that student for the benefit of that student. Each national scholarship recipient will be recognized at the annual Sodexho Foundation Dinner on June 11, 2008 in Washington, DC. All transportation, meals and lodging for the student and up to two immediate family members will be paid for by Sodexho USA. We may select up to 20 regional scholarship honorees; however, we reserve the right to select fewer than 20 regional honorees. Each student selected as a regional Sodexho STOP Hunger Scholarship Honoree will receive a $1,000 grant made in their name to the hunger-related charity of their choice in their local community.

The Challenge
