University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Journalism Alex Haley Playboy Interview Scholarship in

The Alex Haley/Playboy Interview Scholarship in Magazine Journalism has been established in recognition of writer and historian Alex Haley's outstanding contributions to the field of magazine journalism and American literature. Haley conducted the first Playboy Interview in 1962 and was a contributor to the magazine until his death in 1992. The scholarship recipient must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate upperclassman or master's degree student and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the College of Communications' journalism program. The award will be based on academic performance, professional promise and financial need. The scholarship provides an annual stipend of $5,000 and includes a paid summer internship at the editorial offices of Playboy in New York City. The selection of the scholarship recipient will be made each year by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, School of Journalism Scholarship Selection Committee.

East Tennessee State University Academic Performance Scholarships

The Academic Performance Scholarship Program for Tennessee residents awards academic scholarships to entering freshmen and transfer students for the fall semester each year. Students pursuing a second undergraduate degree and currently enrolled students are not eligible. Selection is competitive and awards are made to the students based on academic performance. The APS award amount is $3000 annually ($1500 per semester). Recipients must maintain an overall and semester grade point average of 2.5, pass a minimum of 12 credits per semester, and fulfill a work requirement in order to renew the scholarship for subsequent terms. Award recipients are required to work approximately 5 hours per week for a total of 75 hours per semester. Developmental courses do not count toward the minimum of 12 credits earned or in the semester or overall grade point average required for renewal. APS Scholarship receipient work positions available are located on the APS Jobs List. Availability of awards is contingent on funding levels. Awards for new students are made on a rolling basis. Initial eligibility and renewal requirements may change in the future. New students accepting an APS must register for fall classes or register to attend an orientation program by July 1 or forfeit the scholarship award.

Fisk University Scholarship Programs

Contributions for the creation of an annual scholarship are made on a one-time annual basis and must be for a minimum of $2,500. The entire amount will be provided to the recipient selected by the University and no administrative fee will be retained for annual scholarships. A University official will quote the current tuition fee for calculation of appropriate contributions for annual scholarships. The donor may establish special conditions for awarding of the scholarships such as the student recipient's major, geographical origin, minimum grade point average. Fisk University must agree to any special conditions placed on the awarding of a scholarship. The University Scholarship Committee, will select all scholarship recipients, in accordance with donor conditions. The University reserves the right to establish conditions for the awarding of any scholarship.
