The Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship Symantec will begin accepting applications on Monday, August 25, 2008. The application deadline is Friday, December 12, 2008. Award decisions will be made on February 7, 2009. * Symantec will award Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. and M.S. students who meet the eligibility criteria listed below. A key goal of the program is to fund innovative research that has real-world value, in areas of Symantec’s business interests in information security, availability, and integrity. * Fellowship participants also gain first hand research and development experience through guidance and mentorship from a top scientist of Symantec Research Labs during the fellowship period. Each participant is also encouraged to spend a summer working with their mentor at Symantec on a research project in their area of interest. Provisions of the Award * The fellowship award will cover 100% of tuition and fees for the recipient’s graduate school. * A stipend is provided to cover living expenses while in school ($20,000 for 2009-2010). * Mentors from Symantec Research Labs are paired with award recipients. The mentor is a top researcher who can provide ongoing technical guidance on the recipient’s research, during their graduate training as well as during summer internships at Symantec. * All recipients will be encouraged to take a salaried summer internship with Symantec Research Labs. * Each recipient will be given a laptop preloaded with Symantec software. * Fellowships are awarded to recipients for one academic year and may be extended for a second year, based on the award recipient's continued exceptional academic standing, progress and achievement. Any such extensions will be granted solely at Symantec's discretion. Eligibility Criteria * Applying students must attend a U.S. university in a Ph.D. or Master’s program focused on technology research. Exceptional graduating undergraduate seniors may also apply and final award is contingent on their acceptance to a graduate program. * Preference will be given to students with a desire to work in an industrial research lab and those working on research projects likely to have real-world practical value to customers, in areas related to Symantec’s businesses of information security, availability, and integrity. * The scholarship awards will be made through the university and are not transferable to another academic institution.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards new

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers invites creative teenagers to submit their best works of visual art and writing to The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009! Each year more than 100,000 works of art and writing are submitted to the regional programs of The Awards, including works made this past spring and this summer 2008. Updated guidelines and deadlines will be available on October 1, 2008, but it's not too early to think about preparing new works for submission. To qualify, students must be entering grades 7 - 12 this fall. Artwork and writing created this past spring semester and this summer at home, in summer school, and summer arts programs may be eligible for submission to The Awards for this upcoming school year. Students graduating from high school in 2009 are highly encouraged to begin organizing a portfolio of eight works for scholarship consideration. Lloyd G. Balfour Fellowship new

The Balfour Fellowship program was initiated in 1985 and provides financial assistance to full-time students who are enrolled in accredited graduate or professional schools. The fellowhips were established in honor of Lloyd G. Balfour of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Applicants must be initiated members of an NIC, NPC, NALFO, NPHC, or PFA organization who are in good standing. Awards are based upon scholastic achievement (a minimum of a 3.2 GPA or equivalent is required), campus and community involvement and leadership within one's fraternity/sorority. Requirements (all postmarked by April 15, 2009): * Completed application * Official transcript from your college or universitiy with a minimum 3.2 GPA or equivalent (photocopies are not considered official) * Copy of graduate or professional school acceptance letter.

Microsoft is excited to be offering more than a half-million dollars in scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year. Applications must be postmarked by January 15, 2006. Microsoft will review all applications and select final candidates on the basis of eligibility, quality of application, displayed interest in the software industry, commitment to leadership, and financial need. All applicants will be notified of their status via email on March 15, 2006. We want to encourage students from groups currently underrepresented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. While all candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may apply, a large majority of our scholarships will be awarded to female students, underrepresented minority students, and students with disabilities. Minority applicants must be a member of one of the following groups underrepresented in the software field: African-American, Hispanic, or Native American.

Anne Ford Scholarship Award

The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 award given to a high school senior with an identified learning disability (LD) who is pursuing an undergraduate degree. The deadline for application is December 31. The ideal candidate is a high school senior who has faced the challenges of having a learning disability; is committed to completing a college degree and setting career goals; has demonstrated perseverance; embraces new opportunities; has a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, in the community, and with family and friends; understands how LD affects his/her life and recognizes the importance of self-advocacy; believes in contributing to society in a way that increases the opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities; and will feel comfortable serving as a role model for others who struggle with LD.

Study in Scandinavia Scholarship

+ Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential. Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate education by the start of their project in Scandinavia. Team projects are eligible, but each member must apply as an individual, submitting a separate, fully-document- ed application. First priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received an ASF award. Only in exceptional cases will a third award be considered. Projects should be planned to fall within the summer 2009 - summer 2010 period. Grantsare considered especially suitable for post-graduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study visits of one to three months duration. Fellowshipsare intended to support a year-long stay. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research. The awards support project-related costs, including maintenance, trans- Atlantic round-trip travel, in-country travel, tuition and fees (where applica- ble) and materials expenditures (e.g., books, photocopying, art supplies). + Awards range from Grants (normally $5,000) to Fellowships (up to $23,000). Broadband Changed My Life Scholarship

The goal of the Alliance for Public Technology's national Broadband Changed My Life! campaign is to raise awareness of the benefits of advanced broadband and encourage its universal deployment and adoption. Sorraine Hot, 2007 Contest Winner Sorraine Hot, 2007 Winner The initial Broadband Changed My Life! Contest generated overwhelming interest with over 400 contestants. Winners received awards of $1,000, $500, and $250. Now you can enter the new Tell the Next President Contest! Stories should be 50-300 words ideally, although they can be longer. The focus is to share the story of how high-speed internet access has changed your life and your family members' lives, or how you would like to see broadband used to change the lives of others. The deadline for entries is October 1, 2008. Three winners will be announced in late October and the prizes will be $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. A panel of APT Board members and staff will judge the entries. Early next year, a memorandum with the best contest entries will be sent to the new President and the first place winner will receive a trip to Washington and a ticket to an Inaugural ball. In addition to the nationwide contest, the campaign's initiatives include briefings for Members of Congress and their staffs, a series of brown bag lunches devoted to the life-changing impact of broadband access for various constituencies and other educational outreach efforts.

ASEE SMART Scholarship

In general, stipends range between $25,000 and $41,000 per year, depending on academic status at the time of the award. Participants funded for less than a full academic year will receive stipends on a pro-rated basis. Further information regarding federal employee salary levels may be found at: www.OPM.gov. Is there a cap on tuition funded through SMART? No. If awarded, SMART will fund the total cost of full-time tuition at the regionally accredited U.S. college or university of the applicant's choice. How will the award funding be paid? * Participant stipends will be paid as either a monthly stipend distributed by ASEE or as a bi-weekly salary distributed by the SMART Program Office at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, or, combination thereof. Payment logistics are decided by the SMART Program Office in accordance with program requirements. * Tuition and related educational fees will be paid directly to your university by ASEE. * Health insurance will be provided either through the university's health plan or as an allowance towards a private plan. Retention Scholars should continue their workplace health insurance plans.
