SEA Fall 2008 Scholarship Contest: SHARPen it Up new

http://sharp.sefora.org/chapters/individual-challenge-2008/

Scientists and Engineers for America has a unique opportunity for students to learn more about current science policy issues while earning scholarships for school. Help us add information to the SHARP Network, our science policy wiki, and win one of three $250 prizes. Learn about the intersection of science and politics and get engaged in the 2008 election. Two will win for adding the most information to the SHARP Network, with a third winner for contributing the most interesting information in the time allotted. The SHARP Network is a one-of-a-kind on line tool for tracking the science and tech positions of Congressional incumbents and candidates. It is quickly becoming the go-to site to find information on candidates’ science policies. With the increased attention of the election, SEA is announcing this scholarship contest to help spread the word about the SHARP and to make sure that the information available there is as up to date and informative as possible. Contest details: The contest is open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in the United States. Before getting started, be sure to send an e-mail to contact@sefora.org that includes your first and last name and your SHARP username. This will allow SEA staff to track your participation. (We can always find it later if you start adding before you register with us.) Any information added to the SHARP must be factual, non-partisan, and cited according to the rules in SEA’s Manual of Style. Editing the SHARP is easy- it’s a wiki! Wikis are collaborative web pages that can be modified by anyone who accesses the site. You can check out our video on how to edit the SHARP, which includes ideas on where to find information on candidates. Information added to the SHARP Network should focus on the positions of Representatives, Senators, or candidates on any of the following areas: climate change, energy, environment, health, innovation, national defense, research and research management, and science education. Examine their votes and public statements to establish their record on these important issues. Sources for this information can come from candidate web pages, newspaper articles, and candidates’ speeches. This Network will help voters become educated on science policy issues and allow the public to hold their politicians accountable for the policy promises they make in their campaigns. The contest runs through the entire Fall semester, ending December 1, 2008. SEA staff will compile all the additions to the wiki and determine the contest winners. Two winners of $250 will be determined by the total number of characters added that contribute to the mission of tracking science, health, and related policy positions of incumbents and candidates. A third winner will receive $250 for the most interesting information added. “Most interesting” will be determined by the SEA Staff. In order to count towards your total, additions must be unbiased, factual, and include a citation. SEA has sole discretion in considering which edits meet these criteria. Contest winners will be announced on December 15, 2008.

Berea College provides every admitted student with a tuition scholarship. Many people think that a top-quality education costs a lot of money. We don't. Our generous donors, alumni, and friends have provided Berea College with a remarkable endowment that permits us to combine institutional funds with student financial aid and outside scholarships to ensure that no student pays tuition at Berea. At Berea, there is no out-of-pocket expense for tuition. For most students, this scholarship amounts to $50,000 to $80,000 over four years of enrollment.
