Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition

The Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition for original student research is designed to inspire talented students to investigate the many behavioral, biological, environmental, and social factors that affect health and, based upon this knowledge, to identify ways to improve the health of the public.
Students must submit an original research project that applies epidemiological methods of analysis to a health-related issue in a human population. Epidemiology is the science of exploring patterns of disease, illness, and injury within populations, with the goal of developing methods of prevention, control, and treatment to improve health. Epidemiological methods are used in a wide variety of public health fields to help understand why a health problem occurs, how to prevent it, and how to keep it from spreading.
Deadline is February 2, 2009, 9:00 a.m., Eastern Time, to register online and upload a written Research Report of your research project.
There are 120 semifinalists, of which 60 receive scholarship awards of $1,000 and 60 compete in the regional finals (receive an expense-paid trip to the 2008-09 regional and national competitions in Washington, D.C.). Of the 60 regional finalists, 48 receive scholarship awards of $2,000 and 12 compete in the national finals. Of the 12 national finalists, six receive $15,000 each, two receive $20,000 each, two receive $35,000 each, and the top two national winners receive $50,000 each.

Students must be a citizen or permanent resident (holding a green card) of the United States, and be enrolled in and attending a high school located in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, or the Mariana Islands. Homeschooled students who reside in these countries are also eligible. Only one project per student is accepted and team projects are not eligible.
