Write your own Truth Statement and win a $5,000 college scholarship! In Justina Chen Headley’s debut young adult novel, Nothing but the Truth (and a few white lies), Patty Ho has never felt completely at home in her own half-Asian/half-white skin. As she puts it in her Truth Statement for her English class: TRUTH: I am Patricia Yi-Phen Ho. Patty to my friends; Patty-cake to the one aunt on my mother’s side who speaks to us; and Pattypus to my enemy, Steve Kosanko, a short, stocky bully who’s hated me since fourth grade. He’s right in a way. I may not look half duck-half beaver, but I don’t look wholly anything either. There are lots of “truths” that you discover throughout your life.
