Student Requirements Print E-mail
Grade Point Average:
The Student-Scholar shall maintain a Grade Point Average during his/her first year of not less than a C+ [2.5 out of 3.0 or a 1.5 out of 3.0]. All Student-Scholar must maintain the necessary courses as set forth by the learning institution to be considered a full-time student. After the first full year the Student-Scholar shall maintain a B average [a 3.0 out 4.0 or a 2.0 out of 3.0 GPA]. If for any reason the Student-Scholar drops below the B average at the conclusion of any semester, he/she will be suspended from the program for the following semester. If the Student-Scholar fails to raise his/her Grade Point Average back up to the required B average, the funds of the Foundation will be terminated and the Student-Scholar will be required to repay all funds received from the Foundation prior his/her termination.
Community Service:
The Student-Scholar who receives scholarship money from the Foundation irrespective of the amount of the scholarship money must participate in community service each and every year they receive funds from the Foundation. The community service work is to be done at a non profit organization where no funds are received for the work, must be certified as an appropriate community service entity by the Foundation and the hours necessary must be documented by the non profit entity to the Foundation. The Foundation suggests a Student-Scholar pick a specific community service organization and continue with that organization during all four (4) years of school. The Student-Scholar may select an organization which has impacted the Student-Scholar's family or neighborhood.
Student-Scholars who receive scholarship funds from the Foundation are required to serve a minimum of fifteen hundred (1500) community service hours during the four years as follows:
First year..................... 250 community service hours;
Second year................ 500 community service hours;
Third year.................... 500 community service hours;
Fourth and final year.... 250 community service hours.
A Student-Scholar who fails at the completion of any school year to have completed the necessary community service hours will be suspended for the first semester of the following school year. At the conclusion of the said first semester the Student-Scholar will be terminated from the program unless he/she has completed the necessary hours from the prior year and one-half of the hours necessary for the current year. Any termination of funds as a result of the student's action will require a full and complete refund to be paid by the Student-Scholar back to the Foundation for all funds received prior to the termination.
The school year will be concluded as of the fifteen (15th) day of May. All community service must be done as of the 15th of May. Failure to complete the community service by this date will result in a suspension of benefits under the program for the next semester in September.
No Underage Drinking:
All Student-Scholars will enter into a written agreement that they will not possess, transport and/or sell controlled substances as defined by the Statutes in the jurisdiction where the Student-Scholar has permanent residency and/or in the jurisdiction where the Student-Scholar is attending the institution of higher learning or in any other jurisdiction where the Student-Scholar may be charged with such crimes. The Student-Scholars agree as part of accepting his/her scholarship not to be involved in the consumption, possession, transportation or purchase for other people of alcoholic beverages if they are underage.
The Foundation has determined, given the environment in most colleges, the first offense of underage drinking will be a suspension of privileges for the semester or if all funds have been paid for that semester than for the following semester. Upon re-application, unless there are other circumstances involved, the Student-Scholar will be reinstated. Upon a second underage drinking charge, the Student-Scholar will be immediately terminated from the program. The Student-Scholar obviously will be allowed to apply just to show there were some exceptional or extenuating circumstances involved but generally speaking it is unlikely the Student-Scholar will be allowed to be placed back in the scholarship program. If a Student-Scholar is terminated because of a underage drinking violation he/she will be required to repay all funds received from the Foundation prior to his/her termination.
No Use of Controlled Substance:
The Student-Scholars agree as part of accepting his/her scholarship to enter into a written agreement that they will not to be involved in the consumption, possessing, transporting or selling of controlled substances. Charged with a controlled substance offense will result in an immediate termination from the program upon the charging of the offense. If it is shown, the charges were dismissed as a result of an acquittal or reduced for other reasons, the scholarship will be reinstated. If the charges are for personal use, the Student-Scholar may re-apply and most likely will be reinstated for personal use only. If the charges are for anything other than personal use, be it for possession and/or sale, termination of the scholarship will occur upon the guilty plea or the guilty verdict. The Foundation's position is any pretrial diversionary program where although no guilt is found there is probation, community service or other types of punishment in drug related areas is tantamount to a guilty plea and will be considered a guilty plea for the purposes of this scholarship program and will lead to termination from the program. If a Student-Scholar is terminated because of a controlled substance violation he/she will be required to repay all funds received from the Foundation prior to his/her termination.
Criminal Activity:
The Foundation leaves open the issue of other criminal offenses, they will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Each Student-Scholar-Scholar will be required on an annual basis to complete a criminal record form indicating whether there have been any arrests the prior year and the disposition of those. All Student-Scholar as part of the program will be instructed that upon arrest notice must be given to the Foundation along with a copy of the charges and the Foundation must be kept abreast of what occurs with the charges. Failing to comply and waiting to the following year to submit the form may also lead to termination from the program based on the circumstances in each particular case. If a Student-Scholar is terminated because of a criminal activity violation he/she will be required to repay all funds received from the Foundation prior to his/her termination.
Failure to Comply:
There will be limited exceptions to the failure to complete the community service or the failure to have a Grade Point Avenue as set forth above. If a Student-Scholar requests special exemption the student must prior to being placed on probation notify the Foundation as to the reasons why he/she will not be able to complete the necessary community service or will not be able to maintain the necessary Grade Point Average with specificity. The Student-Scholar shall further cooperate with the Foundation in documenting all of the alleged reasons why the Student-Scholar is unable to complete the necessary requirements. A decision will be made by the Foundation as to whether the exemption shall be allowed. However, in no case, shall the exemption be more than one semester. At the conclusion of the exemption if the Student-Scholar has failed to meet his/her requirements, termination of the funds will occur.
Repayment:
All Student-Scholars will execute, at a time they are legally able to bind themselves, documents which agrees to repay the Foundation any and all monies the Foundation has paid on the Student-Scholars behalf along with a reasonable rate of interest in those case where the Student-Scholar has had his/her scholarship terminated for any of the above reasons. In addition, the parents of the students will execute documents agreeing to reimburse the Foundation if their child has his/her scholarship terminated as a result a violation of the above conditions.
