McNally Smith College of Music Ben Sidran Award for Excellence in Music Production
The Ben Sidran Award is a scholarship given to a returning student at McNally Smith College who 1) best demonstrates his or her ambition to pursue a career as a producer; 2) exhibits strong abilities as a producer; 3) has maintained a good academic record at McNally Smith College; and 4) demonstrates financial need. Faculty nomination required.
Award: The scholarship is an award of $1,000 per semester (for full-time attendance) for the recipient's remaining academic semesters. Renewal is automatic as long as the student achieves a grade point average of 3.0 for each semester's work. Students must maintain full-time status through completion of program.
Eligible Applicants: Any production student that has completed one semester of study; a McNally Smith College faculty member must nominate each applicant (see page 6 of scholarship application form). Applicant must also include a produced recording with a minimum of two tracks, or a maximum of a fully-produced album. The recording should be in CD form and be clearly labeled.
Deadline: Applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2007.
About Ben Sidran: A pianist, producer, singer and composer, Ben Sidran has recorded twenty-five solo albums and has produced recordings for such noted artists as Van Morrison, Diana Ross, Mose Allison and Jon Hendricks. Although best known in some circles for writing Steve Miller's hit song "Space Cowboy", Ben Sidran is more widely recognized as the host of National Public Radio's landmark jazz series "Jazz Alive" and as the host of VH-1 television's "New Visions" series. Sidran was a Distinguished Visiting Artist at Musictech College in 2003.
