Rebuild Louisiana Student Financial Assistance Program
Eligibility Requirements
The Rebuild Louisiana Student Financial Assistance Program will provide financial assistance to eligible students who were impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and who enroll or reenroll at the undergraduate level in a participating postsecondary institution for the fall 2006 semester.
Funds will be allocated to participating institutions utilizing a process similar to the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) program, which is administered by the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA). The program will be jointly administered by the Louisiana Board of Regents (BoR) and LOSFA. The amount of funds allocated to eligible public, private and proprietary postsecondary institutions will be based upon the number of undergraduate students enrolled at the institutions impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and enrollment of students from the parishes impacted by the hurricanes at the non-impacted institutions. Eligible students are selected and certified for the funds by the school's financial aid officer. Interested students must contact the school's financial aid office for specific information about the program. Eligible institutions must be approved to participate in the program.
Institutions may award up to a maximum of $1000 to eligible students, with the individual amounts determined by the financial aid officer based upon the student’s financial need. Priority will be given to students who were not enrolled during the spring 2006 semester. Students must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
1. Were enrolled in fall 2005 at an eligible postsecondary institution impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; or have a permanent residence in a parish* impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; or were enrolled in fall 2005 at a state approved public, private, or home school in a parish* impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and have graduated from high school in the 2005-06 school year; and
2. Be a U.S. citizen or national or eligible noncitizen; and
3. Register with Selective Service, if required; and
4. Annually submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Renewal FAFSA by the deadline set by the school; and
5. Meet the admission requirements or be eligible to continue enrollment and meet the satisfactory academic progress policy requirement at the institution in which the student intends to enroll; and
6. Be selected and certified by the school for receipt of this award, contingent upon final approval by LOSFA; and
7. Be certified as an undergraduate student in an eligible program at an eligible postsecondary institution; and
8. Have substantial financial need that exceeds $199; and
9. Be in compliance with the terms of other federal and state student aid programs that are administered by LASFAC, which the applicant may be receiving; and
10. Not have a criminal conviction, except for misdemeanor traffic violations; and
11. Agree that the award proceeds will be used exclusively for educational expenses; and
12. Not be in default of an educational loan.
*Impacted parishes: Cameron, Calcasieu, Jefferson, Lafourche, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, Washington, and Vermillion.
