Scholarship Information and Availability Updated April 3, 2006 3 Scholarship Programs for High School Seniors and Continuing College Students are accepting applications: *** Deadline is April 21, 2006*** The Ed Kawazoe/Helen Tao Memorial Fund offers three awards to both 2006 High School graduates and continuing college students in the Silicon Valley area who best exemplify the spirit of community activism and leadership, and demonstrate their commitment to help further the goals of the Asian Pacific American community of Silicon Valley. Students with financial need are encouraged to apply. The Ed Iwasaki Memorial Fund offers two $500 scholarships to 2006 graduating high school seniors throughout the United States from all socio-economic levels, gender, cultural and religious backgrounds with a 3.5 or higher GPA with leadership qualities and high academic achievements. The Japanese American Community Resource Organization of Silicon Valley offers one $500 scholarship to a 2006 graduating high school senior in the San Francisco Bay Area from all socio-economic levels, gender, cultural and religious backgrounds who have participated in the legacy and future vitality of the Japanese American community. Back to top BCA Federation of Dharma School Teachers' League Mr. and Mrs. Fred Nitta Scholarship (For official application go to the Church Office) *** Deadline is April 30, 2006*** Eligibility: Must be a member of one or more of the following organizations for at least 2 years: WYBL, Sr. YBA or Jr. YBA. Must be a high school graduate or graduating senior (2006) and be planning to go on to higher education. You will need to provide the following with your application: * List if Scholastic honors and scholarships * List of all campus activities with years, positions held and awards received. * Work history * List of all community and temple involvement with years, positions held and awards received. * Copy of official transcripts * Essay on a specified Buddhist topic (see application) * Three letters of recommendation - minister, YBA Advisor, teacher or school official The Nitta Scholarship Selection Committee will evaluate the application on the following basis: Scholastic Achievement 30% Extracurricular Activities: - Temple 25% - School 10% - Community 10% Essay 25% The recipient will receive a cash award of $500 (five hundred dollars). Cover Letter (Word doc) and Application (Word doc) San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarship The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Scholarship is offered to outstanding graduating high school seniors. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of SJ Temple participation, academic achievement, participation in school, community activities and work experience. Ray and Lucy Matsumoto Scholarship Ray and Lucy Matsumoto have established a Betsuin Scholarship to honor a graduating senior who is planning on entering school as a business major. This high school senior would reflect the changing challenges that face the high school senior in today's environment. With this scholarship, the Matsumoto's hope to promote the importance of a business education. James Takeo Hashimoto Memorial Scholarship The Hashimoto family has established a scholarship to be awarded to a graduating high school senior in memory of the late James Takeo Hashimoto, an active supporter of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin. The recipient of this award is a Buddhist youth who subscribes to the Bodhisatva ideal and who actively participates in San Jose Bestuin sponsored youth programs. San Jose Buddhist Church Adult Buddhist Association (ABA) Scholarship The San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin Adult Buddhist Association, in recognition, of the value of education and especially for the young people of our Sangha, have established this scholarship. The graduating high school senior has attained academic achievements, in addition to their support of Temple and community activities. Masato and Chieno Kumada Memorial Scholarship The family of Masato and Chieno Kumada has endowed an annual scholarship in memory of their parents who believed in the importance of education. The family hopes this scholarship will provide some assistance and encouragement to a graduating high school senior in their pursuit of a higher education. The recipient is recognized for their academic achievement and participation in temple activities. Phil Matsumura Memorial Scholarship The family of Phil Matsumura established this scholarship in order to recognize the academic achievements of an outstanding Betsuin Jr. YBA member. The student awarded this scholarship has shown a commitment to the values of the Buddhadharma and academic excellence. Ben and Kimie Sanematsu Memorial Scholarship Ben Sanematsu initially endowed this annual college scholarship in memory of his wife, Kimie Yanagawa Sanematsu, a dedicated educator for twenty-five years. An active Betsuin member and successful undergraduate student is awarded this college scholarship. The award has now been changed to honor both Ben and Kimie. Sadao Sakai Memorial Scholarship The family of Sadao Sakai established this scholarship to be awarded to either a graduating high school student or a student currently enrolled in college. The recipient must be supportive in their community and active within the Buddhist Church.
